29 Jun 2010 - Taxing your car on line

Save time and fuel by doing it online.

How does it work?

First go to the DVLA website. Add your vehicle details, then enter either the 16 digit reference number shown on your renewal reminder, or the 11 digit reference number from your Registration Document/Certificate (also known as the Logbook) and your vehicle registration mark (numberplate).

For a new tax disc they check the vehicle is insured and, if applicable has an electronic MOT Test Certificate/GVT Certificate or entitlement to disability exemption.

You choose the tax disc you want, 6 or 12 months, and then enter your payment card details.

You should receive the new tax disc in the post within 5 working days or a SORN confirmation letter within 4 weeks.

That's it done. Simple.

There is however a couple of small things to remember. If your paying by credit card then there is a charge of £2.50 to be added on.
Secondly the tax disc will not be sent immediately and can take upto 5 days to get to you.

All things considered if you value your time and getting to a Post office isn't convenient, especially one that issues licenses, then for
a small additional charge you can do it all in a few minutes from the comfort of your arm chair.
